There is a new man in my life. His name is Danny and we met last week while I was away on a writing retreat. I wasn't expecting this to happen - no one ever does - but there he was, waiting for me to find him.
He is 26 and he needs my help. Given that I created the predicament in which he finds himself, it is only fair that I take responsibility for putting things right. Indeed, I have no choice but to grapple with the how-abouts and what-ifs.
This is the role of the writer. Danny is a fictional character I created during my week away at Foxes' Retreat.
Oh, wait: you didn't think...?

A local post, for local people
I realise that if you live miles from Northamptonshire, this isn't going to mean anything to you, but here goes anyway.
As part
of Thrapston Arts Festival, I'm holding a creative writing workshop in the
town's library on Friday 7 June, 2.30-3.30pm. It's for anyone who's ever
fancied creating a character for a novel or short story or just for fun. No
experience necessary, just an open mind and a willingness to have a go. Please
tell anyone you think might like to come along.
And while
we're here, let's give a round of applause to the volunteers everywhere who are keeping our libraries open.

I'm running a workshop

| Not a bad place to be working |
I hope not, because I'm excited to confirm that on Sunday 27 May, as part of the Festival Books at Delapre Abbey in Northampton, I'm running a workshop on 'Creating Fictional Characters'. Now, I appreciate that not all of you live within spitting distance of the county, but if you did happen to be free it would be lovely to see some friendly faces looking back at me.
The site is worth a visit for its own sake. There has been an abbey there for over 900 years, but it fell into a sad state during the 1990s. Now the building and the beautiful grounds have been restored and it is a venue for all sorts of activities.
Tickets can be booked here.
