Breathing space

When you're self-employed, Bank Holidays can be a good time to catch up with admin, secure in the knowledge that any clients with 'proper jobs' won't be interrupting you. That's what I'm doing this morning, pottering about and shuffling papers; but the rest of the weekend will be dedicated to relaxation and restoration, whatever the weather throws at me.

Mr Thorley has reported sorrowfully that according to his allotment spreadsheet (don't judge), we are already a month behind compared to last year's planting schedule. The old adage about watching the weather not the calendar has never been truer. The lack of onion sets in the ground is the talk of the field, I can tell you! Nevertheless, he has gone off this morning, with his spade over his shoulder, to do 'something'.

So while it's peaceful at home, I'm going to take a look at some short stories I have lurking. I was one of the short-listed writers in the Words Magazine Short Story, so that tale needs moving from the 'can't be used' file to the 'needs a home' file. Then I shall return to my Lee Child book. I can't get enough of this writer.

Have a lovely weekend, folks.

  1. Wow, congratulations, Julia, on having your story short-listed. That is just terrific. So glad for you. I've been entering contests this week and last. It feels so good to get those works out of the filing cabinet and on their way to somewhere. Cross fingers.

    1. The tomato seedlings are sprouting in the greenhouse; the allotment is submerged by water. Nobody said growing stuff would be easy...

  3. What a lovely cheery post, with lots of plans. The image of Mr T with a spade over his shoulder going off to do 'something' on the allotment made me smile.
This weather is 'annoying' to say the least!

Your plans sound sensible, I spent Good Friday relaxing, I did nothing, and even got up very very late, due to having to do a horrendous 11 hours of driving the previous day plus three hours work at the destination. Not good.

Today, Saturday, I'm planning to do some writing and I'm off to my writers group too.

Well done on your short listed story, and yes, get it out there again.
    Happy Easter, enjoy!

  6. If the vegetables in the picture are from you garden, I'm impressed! Maybe I should grow some onions, but I'm afraid we eat onions faster than I would be able to grow them.

    1. Yes, they're from our allotment. The thing about onions is that they're really easy to store. We grow hundreds, then at harvest time we plait the stalks and hang them in our shed until we need them.
